Beauty Flash! Dr. Amy Wechsler Weighs In on Cool Cucumber: Skin’s Best Friend

Looking for an added daily defense against sun and free radicals? Want to treat puffy eyes? Hoping to soothe visible redness or irritation? These skin issues are not uncommon, but according to renowned New York City dermatologist and psychiatrist, Dr. Amy Wechsler, the solution for all may be as close as your kitchen! “Cucumbers are not only low in calories, but are filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can feed your complexion inside and out,” Dr. Wechsler says.

Here’s how:

  • Hiding the evidence of a late night…

Out too late? Or working too hard? Perhaps the baby didn’t get enough sleep and as a result neither did you? No matter the reason, lack of sleep can lead to puffy eyes, which are unsightly and at times uncomfortable. Reach for a refrigerated and sliced cucumber. Place the rounds over your eye socket, where they will act like little ice-packs and relieve puffy lids. One reason: cucumbers are 90% water which helps them to stay cool even in warm spots. This will minimize swelling by constricting the blood and lymph vessels that bring fluid to the eye area.

  • Soothing sunburns (or other irritations)…

The cucumber is full of natural anti-inflammatories that will help to calm and soothe red and irritated skin. Place thin slices on the butterfly region of your face and lie down for 15 minutes. After time is up, remove the slices and apply a light moisturizer.

  • Providing an added layer of protection…

Cucumbers contain vitamin C and caffeic acid, two antioxidants that, when applied to skin, help fend off wrinkles, sun damage and more. Vitamin C helps to build collagen and elastin while caffeic acid inhibits cancer cells and protects skin exposed to UV radiation. Try a soothing cucumber mask at home to give your skin a boost. Barely puree half a cucumber and two tablespoons of plain yogurt making a thick mixture. Apply to your skin and relax for 15 minutes before rinsing away with warm water.

Super ingredients are developed all of the time in labs making your skincare better and better, but sometimes the greatest ingredients for super-skin have been around for centuries and can be found right in your own home.

The Ladies Behind the (Cosmetic) Lines

By Dana DeMercurio

According to recent data by leading market research company Lucintel, the global cosmetic industry is forecasted to reach nearly $265 billion by 2017. That’s billion with a ‘b,’ ladies.  This number is not all that surprising since a decent drugstore bronzer or mascara can cost upwards of $17 these days, however it does pique our interest regarding brand loyalty and recognition. Many brands have become household names, yet how much do we really know about the brand and how it got started? For instance, did you know that Benefit Cosmetics was founded by twin sisters from Indiana? Or that one of your favorite nail polish brands was peddled to salons in Las Vegas before hitting the global market? Today, you’re getting a lesson in beauty basics, starting with the phenomenal women who founded some of your (and our!) favorite beauty brands.

ladies1

Jamie Kern Lima: Perhaps you remember Lima from her QVC spotlight before making it to the big leagues with her now $100 million cosmetic company, IT Cosmetics. Lima’s entrepreneurial prowess was kickstarted after she quit her day job as a news anchor in 2008 and starting cranking out Bye-Bye Undereye Concealer – a product of the company which was being run from her apartment in Studio City, Calif. Lima’s high performance cosmetics are developed alongside top-ranking plastic surgeons using the finest ingredients and latest anti-aging technology.  IT Cosmetics can be found at beauty megastore Ulta and online at itcosmetics.com.

ladies2

Lisa Chetrit: Growing up in a Moroccan-American household, Kesh Beauty founder and CEO Lisa Chetrit was no stranger to the now coveted and highly sought-after Argan oil. A staple not only for beauty routines with hair and skin but an edible accoutrement for an array of home-cooked meals, Chetrit was familiarized with the golden liquid at an early age. It wasn’t until her trip to Marrakesh in her twenties, however, until she truly realized Argan oil’s value.  Kesh Beauty was birthed upon her return home, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sourcing only natural ingredients of the highest quality for her products, Chetrit’s line is 100% organic and benefits the women’s cooperative from which it is sourced in the mountains of Morocco. Kesh Beauty has a bevy of eco-friendly beauty products for hair, face and body that every women should have in her arsenal.

ladies3

Tamika Fletcher: Meet Tamika Fletcher – hair guru, DIY devotee and founder of under-the-radar product line, Earth’s Nectar.  Fletcher is all about women embracing their natural locks, so she created a haircare line specifically for women with curly hair who want to go au natural.  As the co-owner of Natural Resources Salon, Fletcher knows a thing or two about hair, and teachers her clients about the benefits of going chemical-free. In fact, her entire product line is designed to make women feel good about their natural curls, even if they’ve been damaged by hot tools or chemicals in the past. These eco-friendly products can be found in stores and online at Sephora.com.

ladies5

Shannon Dellimore: Originally designed in 2010 for exclusive backstage and professional use throughout Hollywood’s award industries, GLAMGLOW was eventually made available to the public market after its staggering success in Tinseltown – thanks in part to co-founder Shannon Dellimore. Alongside husband Glenn, this dynamic duo created a cosmetic empire from the ground up that includes a plethora of seemingly magical facial mud masks that boast stunning results.  Dellimore’s skincare brand comes with a sterling reputation, and she has the awards and accolades to prove it! All of Dellimore’s products include a patented formula with TEAOXI technology that works with all skin types for both men and women.  Check out GlamGlowMud.com to learn more about Dellimore and her line of youth-restoring facial products.

ladies6

Jean and Jane Ford: The cosmetic industry got a double dose of beauty in the late 70’s when twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford outgrew their small-town Indiana roots and headed west to make it big in the beauty business. There were a few speed bumps on their path to cosmetic celebrity, however.  The sisters tried their hand at modeling in the Big Apple, catching their big break when they landed a few national commercial ads for Calgon bath beads. The two quickly realized that the model life won’t last forever, and took their catwalk capital to San Francisco where they opened Face Place, later to be known as Benefit Cosmetics. That’s right –the nostalgic, feel-good, quirky and oh-so-original beauty brand was founded by twin sisters whose mantra “make-up doesn’t have to be serious to look good” teaches us all that laughter is the best cosmetic. Ford’s daughters Maggie and Annie are now the faces of the company too! A truly family-run empire. Become a Benefit beauty by visiting BenefitCosmetics.com.

ladies7

Sasha Muir:  At the forefront of fashion stands butter LONDON nail polish, founded by British entrepreneur Sasha Muir. Muir has launched three successful brands from the ground up, making her a cosmetic connoisseur in our book. Her line of luxurious liquid lacquer is a catwalk veteran, donning the nails of models from the U.S. to Milan and everywhere in between. Her beloved butter LONDON lacquer is by far one of our favorite beauty products, with an assortment of brilliant colors, perfect for the diva in us all. Browse her colorful collection here – butterLONDON.com.

Ever feel overwhelmed when it comes to finding fashion that speaks directly to you? Are you looking for a brand that offers more than just a high-end or popular label? Do you support companies with valuable products that inspire you to take the world by storm and live up to your potential rather than fall in line behind others? Ditch the monotonous memes, habitual hashtags and clichéd quotes that have saturated the clothing industry, and opt for All the Above Clothing.  ATA Clothing line for men and women features tees inspired by precious life moments and experiences rather than pop culture. It was a simple request from her 10-year-old son Oliver that drove Mindy Scheier to challenge conventional clothing options for children and adults with physical disabilities. Suffering with muscular dystrophy, Oliver’s request to wear jeans to school left Mindy questioning why jeans were not created to fit over her child’s leg braces he needed in order to walk. She saw this request from her son as an opportunity to enhance his options by adapting mainstream clothing to fit those who are differently-abled. Whether confined by a wheelchair, leg braces or other obstacle that once left a person with fewer fashion options, the possibilities are now improving thanks to Mindy’s Runway of Dream Foundation. Now the authority on adapting mainstream clothing, Runway of Dreams’ goal is to “change the fashion landscape so it’s inclusive of everyone,” especially children like Mindy’s son. Collaborating with major players in the fashion industry, not-for-profit Runway of Dreams has launched a successful indiegogo campaign which encourages people to take action and change the lives of those struggling with fewer clothing options due to physical disabilities. Ultimately, the designer hopes that Runway of Dreams will become an option in major mainstream clothing stores throughout the nation and beyond. Summer camps aren’t just for kids anymore, and adults the world over are starting to take note. According to the American Camp Association, an estimated 1 million adults now partake in the summer camp experience each year. And this enthusiasm for camping runs the gamut—as does the age of participants—from nostalgia and summer camp first-timers to adventure hounds and fun seekers.

Some camps seem like an extension of your local sorority, endless alcohol and parties and single adults on the prowl. Others are business- or adventure-minded, and hark back to the days before modern conveniences became such a prominent fixture in our lives.

Regardless of your niche, or your reason for wanting to explore this brave new world of adult summer camps, be sure to do your homework when picking a destination and, above all else, have fun.

Check out this list of adult-themed summer camps. Make new friends. Relive the good ol’ days. Your choice—you’re an adult now. You’ve earned it!

Streamline Your Summer Wardrobe the Parisian Way

By Greer Barnes

When you’re a busy mom taking care of everyone else, it can be difficult to find the time to take care of your own stuff, namely a disorganized and overstuffed closet. But thanks to the genius concept of the ten-item wardrobe, you won’t have to struggle in search of the perfect outfit ever again.

Originating in France and introduced to Americans by writer Jennifer L. Scott in her book Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris, the ten-item wardrobe suggests that a woman have no more than ten core pieces in her closet each season. With the help of the right shoes, some unique accessories, and a few other seasonal items to complete the look, those ten pieces are all you’ll ever need to wear, whether you’re leading a discussion at work or taking the kids to baseball practice. Don’t know what pieces to include in your summer wardrobe? Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

1. and 2. Two button-downs will be the most versatile pieces in your closet this summer. Pair yours with a skirt and a jacket for work or dress them down with a pair of jeans and flats for a casual family picnic. While one in white always looks crisp and clean, pastels like light blue or baby pink also look great for the summer and will work well with the neutrals in your wardrobe.

modclothparisian4

3. A pair of classic trousers is an essential. While wool blend pants work well in winter, a lighter fabric like a cotton blend is much more summer friendly. Opt for a tan or navy pant in lieu of black for a fresh look.

parisian3

4. A summer jacket to wear with your work trousers is a must. Don’t have one or need a new one? When shopping, look for one that nips in at the waist and ends at the top of your hips for the best fit.

modclothblazermodclothblazer

5. A flattering skirt looks just as great with a dressy top as it does with a white tee. High-waisted skirts look best on women with long torsos, while an A-line skirt works on just about everyone. Make sure the length hits no shorter than just above the knee so you can wear it worry-free at the office.

modclothskirt

6. A pair of denim jeans will be your go-to weekend pant this summer so make sure they fit you well! While skinny jeans have been popular the past few years, 70s-style pants are making a comeback this season. Straight-legged jeans with a slight flair at the bottom will make your legs look long and lean, especially when paired with a cute pair of wedges or classic pumps.

jeans1 1969 perfect boot jeans - dark

7. A denim jacket is a classic summer staple. Make yours stand out from the crowd by choosing one with embellishments. You can even DIY your own by adding a little on-trend fringe to the back of the one already hanging in your closet. Trés chic!

torridjacket

8. An all-occasion dress is the ultimate symbol of femininity. Pair it with your denim jacket for a grocery store run or with your summer jacket and a statement necklace for an easy office look.

modclothdressgapfloraldress

9. Shorts are a must during warm weather season. When choosing a color and fabric, think about your lifestyle. Are you staying at home with the kids this summer? Maybe denim shorts are what you need. Flying a lot this summer? Choose a breathable knit that will wear well as you build up frequent flier miles.

modclothblanktrek

10. A dressy top is last on our list but definitely not the least. Like a button-down shirt, a pretty top will pair well with your jeans, trousers, or skirt. Neutral colors are always nice, but a bold, bright print is especially summery and a great conversation piece.

Hummm-us!

By Haley Bridges

The weather is warm, the sun is beating down on your body, you feel the soft sand in between your toes, sipping on a iced coffee that tastes and looks like a milkshake. Your server comes back with the food you ordered, hmm tomatoes and cucumber, tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanoush and pita. A perfect meal, for a perfect day.

After spending 10 phenomenal days in the Kingdom of Jordan and Tel Aviv, Israel it is easy to see why the Mediterranean diet is one of the best diets out there. It has an abundance of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, legumes and olive oil. The diet consists of fish and chicken rather than red meat, which is a huge source of bad fat. Everything is fresh and healthy; it is something you can taste with every bite you take. Plus it is suggested to have a glass of red wine with every meal! (Drink in moderation, of course!). There was not one meal that was served that I did not want to have again and again.

One dish that was always available was hummus. Their hummus was like nothing I have ever had before. The texture and taste was smooth and creamy, a perfect dish to spread on top of your pita or to even eat by the spoonful. Since the main ingredient is chickpeas it is a great healthy dish to have as a snack or apart of a main meal. Hummus is great for helping lower cholesterol, it’s easy to make, it may help you eat healthier and it provides great sources of fiber, which will help you stay full for longer.

Since hummus is healthy all on its own, if you start eating it, it will most likely make you want to change the rest of your diet to being healthy as well. Another great aspect to this delicious dish is that it is very easy to make. All you need to chickpeas, tahini, garlic, cumin, paprika (optional), lemon juice and olive oil. You add them all together in a food processor and then you are ready to go! Hummus is also very versatile; you can make many different flavors from jalapeno, avocado, pesto, and sun-dried tomato. All you have to do is add the ingredient you want to the regular hummus recipe and there you go!

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Fiber is best known for helping to keep food moving efficiently through your body. This is only one of the many ways fiber contributes to good health.” Since hummus is a good source of fiber if you have it as a snack or as apart of meal it will help you stay fuller for longer, preventing the urge for snacking throughout the day or over eating at a meal. 12 Ways to Eliminate Allergy Triggers in Your Home

$

provided by the Pro.com team

Spring typically delivers more allergen triggers than any other time of the year – however, this year, allergy sufferers will feel even more miserable with what doctors are saying will be one of the worst allergy seasons, a pollen tsunami.

Thanks to the polar vortex that was responsible for frigid, snowy weather this past winter, plants, grass and trees have all received plenty of moisture and are blooming simultaneously and releasing higher pollen levels. Dr. James Love of the Tulsa Allergy Institute also warns of that with the wet and warm weather occurring, mold is another allergen that will be in the air.

In order to limit the amount of suffering you will experience during this volatile allergy season, here are 13 ways to prevent allergy triggers from infesting your home.

  1. Identify Your Triggers

The first step in managing your allergies are to know what sets them off to begin with. If you can’t pinpoint what you are allergic to, an allergist can help identify your triggers. Knowledge is power, and once you know your triggers, you can target prevention of symptoms.

  1. Install Allergy-Friendly Window Dressing

Avoid installing window dressings that are allergy magnets such as frilly curtains or venetian blinds. Opt for metallic blinds that can easily be dusted, or simple drapes that are machine washable.

  1. Encase Your Bedding

Prevent allergy-causing dust and mites from taking over your bedding by encasing your box spring, mattress and pillows in allergy-proof casing. This is greatly cut down allergens aggravating your symptoms.

  1. Upgrade Your Vacuum

Give your sinuses a break by using a hardshell contained vacuum cleaner or one that uses a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) vacuum bag to prevent allergens from blowing back out as conventional ones will do. Vacuum your home 1–2 times a week and always empty out your vacuum outdoors.

  1. Allergy-Friendly Containers

When storing items away, avoid cardboard boxes as they are magnets for mold, especially when stored in dark, moist spaces like our basements and attics. Instead, stash away items in waterproof plastic containers that will prevent mold buildup, and are easier to see into when you need to find something in particular.

  1. Limit Your Clutter

Take this opportunity to spring clean and declutter areas of your home that are hiding allergens. Ditch items such as old magazines and minimize the number of decorations you keep.

  1. Mold-Proof Your Bathroom

Your bathroom can be a mold magnet with the amount of moisture it has. If you have wallpaper on your bathroom walls, replace it immediately with mold-resistant paint or with tile to eliminate the walls absorbing moisture and growing mold. Be sure to always air out your bathroom by using the fan and opening windows when possible.

  1. Use High-Efficiency Filters

You should replace your furnace filter about every three months with a high-efficiency filter with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) of 11 or higher. They cost a little more, but the allergy sufferers in your family will greatly benefit from these filters since they capture 99% of airborne allergy triggers including pollen, bacteria and fumes.

  1. Balance Humidity Levels

You’ll want to purchase a dehumidifier for your home to cut down on moisture levels in your home. Low humidity levels will decrease the growth of mold and mites in your home. Be sure to clean out filters and trays regularly.

  1. Allergy-Proof Pets

You may not be directly allergic to your pet family member, however, their fur can be a magnet for allergy triggers. They can roll around plants or the floor, picking up pollen and dust. Banning them from furniture and your bed may be hard, so give your pets a good washing once a week to lower the risk for allergens.

  1. Maintain Your A/C Unit

Clean your A/C unit of debris and leaves to prevent mold spores from entering your home. Check your yard to ensure there aren’t pies of decaying compost with spores inside that the wind can carry and flow into your open windows. Jump on this clean up in the springtime, and then check on it throughout the year.

  1. Avoid Early Mornings

Experts say that pollen levels are the highest between 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. so try to avoid being out during this time. Although the cool night air feels good during warmer weather, avoid these peak allergen hours by also keeping windows closed overnight and running the A/C unit instead.

This app allows you to take an ordinary, easily monotonous car drive and transform it into an educational adventure for the kids. It points out historical routes, scenic landmarks and other historical gems along the way. Your kids will be entertained even before you reach your intended destination.

This app allows moms to fill in vacation downtime and tap into the support network of like-minded mothers sharing local information about family-friendly points of interest. Regardless of where you find yourself, use this app with information from other parents to locate tried and true restaurants and events, as well as parks and play areas on a detailed map that shows you how to get there.

A similar app, Sit or Squat, is also there for you in an emergency. Based on user reviews, it allows you to find nearby bathrooms anywhere in the world and it notes if the bathrooms are open or closed, and if they’ve been recommended by other users.

Postino

Gone are the days of scurrying around while on vacation in search of the perfect postcard only to have it lost in the mail. With this app, you can turn your prized photographs into postcards and send them electronically to friends and family. The app allows you to send the image you truly want and to be sure that it gets to its destination. But hey, if snail mail is still your style, you have the option of printing the postcards out and mailing them for a fee as well. Postagram is a similar app that allows you to be your own postmaster.

TripIt

With confirmation emails, addresses and excited kids to look after, reaching your destination might seem like a Herculean task. Not anymore! This app allows you to keep track of all your important travel details with ease. You can construct custom itineraries by hand or simply forward your confirmation emails from the various providers you’re using, such as airfare, rental cars, hotels, etc., and the app will convert all the data into a chronological itinerary with all of your pertinent information in one place. Concise viewing and ease of use all at your fingertips!

This godsend of an app allows parents to navigate the tricky world or airport terminals and quickly, easily find important information based on arrival and departure times. Find restaurants, restrooms, kids’ play zones and more, and make use of the app’s detailed airport maps and useful navigation tools as well.

This handy app allows you to access everything you might need about the climate in multiple locations. It allows you to find flights, lodging and even rental cars all in one place. You can also use it to manage itineraries, track flights and receive price alerts. On a related note, if you happen to be searching for a same-day family-friendly hotel, the HotelTonight app has you covered. The app even rates hotels and provides room descriptions for the discerning last-minute planner.

YouTube Kids

Don’t have enough space in your luggage to bring along your child’s favorite movies? If you’ve elected to leave behind the DVDs, music and books that tend to keep your child occupied, this app can help with the possible repercussions! Let your kids watch educational movies or listen to appropriate tunes all with the ease of a functional and reliable app. And you don’t have to worry about them seeing what they shouldn’t as the app is already filtered to provide programs and videos for younger viewers.

In addition to the apps listed above, there are a host of other apps geared towards reading and learning comprehension for children. While some of these apps are free, others offer free trials while still others cost relatively little to quite a lot for a yearly subscription. Websites, such as the Fun Educational Apps site , allow you to take your pick of the fun for children of all ages!

Sweet Treats to Beat the Heat

By Haley Bridges

Summer is in full swing! Now that your kids are ending school and starting their summer adventures you have to think about the different kinds of snacks and foods you’ll need for the next two months. Summer is the time for icy, creamy, frozen treats to keep everyone cool.

One of the hardest things about sweet treats is that many of them contain a lot of sugar. Seeing as sugar is one of the reasons the United States has a problem with obesity it is crucial to make sure the treats you give your kids have as little as possible. Now you might be thinking sweet treats that have little sugar, how is that possible? Will my kids even like it? The answer is yes they will! If you make the treats yourself it is much easier to control the amount of sugar in them.

Here’s how you do it:

First use fresh fruit. Fresh fruit contains natural sugar so it will not be necessary to add more sugar. You can use fruit to make ice cream, popsicles, fruit tarts or chocolate covered desserts. Summer is one of the best times to get and use fresh fruit since there is a lot that are in season. From June to August you can get apricots, blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, cherries, peaches and plums. To get a full list of everything that is available check out this website http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/whats-in-season-summer.

Use healthy beverages. Beverages like coconut water, lemonade, tea and juice (make sure it’s 100% juice or juice your own) are great ways to make delicious healthy popsicles. Pour them into popsicle molds and freeze! Or if you want to go the extra mile add fruit to the molds first then add the liquid! If you are thinking you want more of a dessert than a snack you can go a little sweeter and add gummy bears or sour worms! The best thing about this is that you can control and tailor what your kids are getting.

Use yogurt. Yogurt is a great healthy snack that can be frozen. Yogurt is filled with probiotics, protein, potassium and calcium, which are all basic nutrients that are needed to keep the body healthy and filled with energy. Since yogurt comes in many different flavors it’s a great food to use for a healthy sweet treat. You can make frozen yogurt pops, frozen yogurt dots, yogurt covered pretzels, smoothies and yogurt dip for fruit. A great way to make yogurt a little sweeter is to add some honey to it, this way you get a healthy and sweet snack.

Chocolate! Most people associate chocolate with being an unhealthy dessert or a spatiality dessert and while both are true however if chocolate is used in moderation and is paired with the correct food, there are no reasons it can’t be used. You can make chocolate covered fruit, chocolate covered pretzels and nuts and frozen fudge pops.

There are many more ways to use each of these items, all you have to do is go out there and give it a try for yourself. Trial and error is one of the best ways to see what you and your family likes and what you don’t like. Find something that suits everyone and roll with it.

Here is a simple fruit Popsicle recipe to get you started!

Fruit Pop

  • 10 pieces of fruit (any kind)
  • 1 container of coconut water
  • Popsicle molds
  1. Cut up the fruit into any size you want
  2. Add the fruit to the molds
  3. Add coconut water
  4. Freeze overnight

Enjoy! Happy Eating!

Stay-At-Home Manicures Made Easy

By Dana DeMercurio

We all want perfectly manicured nails, but at what cost? A trip to the salon comes with a price tag anywhere from $15-$50, so why not perfect your mani/pedi at home at a fraction of the cost? Don’t despair if your nail painting skills are on par with preschool art lessons – we’ve got the tools you need to create a polished, professional look every time.

What you’ll need:

Step 1: Stock up on tools

This is the mise-en-place portion of the polish program. For a salon-quality look, having everything you need at your fingertips is the best way to start. A quick and inexpensive trip to your local beauty store is where you can gather the majority of your essentials like these:

  • Nail polish remover (Tip: we suggest using straight acetone for efficiency purposes, but fragrant nail polish gets the job done too)
  • Cotton swabs/Q-Tips (Tip: using products with more cotton only allows it to end up mixed in with your newly polished nails. Stay aware from large cotton balls!)
  • Cuticle remover (Tip: this is a very delicate process. Be sure to follow my instructions below on how to safely remove excess cuticles around nails)
  • Emery board and nail buffer (Tip: try to find the all-in-one nail buffer with 5-7 sides that gets the job done without switching tools.)
  • Nail clippers (Tip: only use clippers if your nails need a serious trim. Otherwise, stick with the emery board for shortening and shaping).
  • Nail moisturizer
  • Base coat
  • Nail polish
  • Top coat

In addition to these essentials, we suggest Liquid Palisade by Kiesque –the ultimate cure for messy manis. This peel-off liquid ($22) acts as a barrier between nails and cuticles for all those paint mishaps. It creates a perfect line around your cuticle to keep color off skin and on your nails. Just apply this quick-drying liquid before base and color, and simply peel off when done – it’s seriously that easy!

manicure1

Step 2: Remove previous nail polish

Don’t, I repeat DON’T, paint over old polish. Take the time to remove previous color with polish remover with or without an acetone base. Just be sure not to soak your entire fingernail in remover unless removing a gel-based polish, as it can have a serious drying effect which may damage cuticles.

Step 3: File and shape nails

Depending on the length and strength of your nails, shaping can be just as creative as the color you choose! Take a peek at the nail-shaping cheat sheet below to help you choose the right look for you. Stiletto and ballerina shapes are the current trend for edgier looks, while rounded and oval are classic looks that are always in style.

manicure2

Step 4: Soak nails and cuticles

A three to five minute soak in warm water is all your fingertips need to soften cuticles enough for trimming and pushing away excess skin from your nails.

Step 5: Cuticle removal

The cuticle is a vital area of the nail that protects it from bacteria, so it’s best to be gentle at this stage in the manicure. Simply push back the cuticle from the nail with the appropriate tool, making sure you don’t clip, cut or rip the cuticle. If you’ve got hangnails, this is also the time to remove those pesky (and painful!) growths. Again, be gentle. No need to make yourself bleed or cause discomfort. This is all about beautification, not agitation!

Step 6: Polish Prepping

Make sure your hands are clean of polish remover, debris or any other contaminants that may hinder perfect painting. Apply one layer of base coat before adding color. Now’s also the time to apply Liquid Palisade by Kiesque for those inevitable slips outside the nailbed. Apply a thin layer to areas your DO NOT want to polish, allow to dry and get ready to paint with ease and confidence.

Step 7: Applying polish in layers

I personally apply three layers of polish (depending on color), but some choose only two. Whatever your preference, make sure you allow the polish to dry between layers as to eliminate the chance of smudging or streaking. Once finished, apply a top coat for the ultimate shine and a little added protection.

Step 8: Cleanup & enjoy!

If you purchased Liquid Palisade, cleanup is a simple peel-off process. Otherwise, you may need to apply some polish remover with cotton swab around areas that were accidentally colored.

Ahh, now wasn’t that easy!? You’re welcome.

Get Your Summer Glow on with Pellevé

$

By Greer Barnes

We’ve all paid the price for beauty in one way or another, whether it was wearing that pair of uncomfortable, sky-high heels that made our legs look great or enduring thirty minutes of painful eyebrow waxing to get that perfect arch. Maybe you even recall spending three hours perfecting your cat-eye liner for a first date that never led to a second one. Whatever the case may be, you’ve probably found yourself wishing you didn’t have to sacrifice so much time and comfort for beauty. Now with the arrival of new skin methods like the Pellevé System you won’t have to sacrifice time away from your kids or endure a painful procedure to reveal smoother, brighter, more youthful skin.

The Pellevé System consists of non-surgical treatments that gradually distribute radio frequency energy into the skin.

pelleve2

“Essentially the radio frequency waves are creating a thermal injury, for lack of a better description, by heating up the collagen and elastin fibers to cause them to contract and tighten to repair/restore themselves,” says Aesthetician Kristi Lett of the Lett Center in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee.

The heat is nothing to be afraid of however. Often patients say the treatments are comparable to a warm facial massage. The Pellevé System has even been approved by the FDA.

Lett says that the treatment “is typically described as a warm ultrasound using viscous gel.” Once the ideal temperature has been reached, multiple passes over the skin with different devices ensures that the optimal results will be reached.

“Again, this unlike historical treatments where topical anesthetic cream was used to alleviate discomfort because each additional pass became more intense due to heating of the skin’s tissue. While the skin’s tissue is indeed heating with each additional pass (of the Pellevé System), it is still very tolerable.”

Because Pellevé treatments are non-surgical, you will not have the down time and side effects associated with other skin-tightening procedures. The system is color-blind and suitable for all skin types even during the summer months when the skin’s increased exposure to UV rays is often an issue.

Though patients will see improvement in their skin’s appearance after just one treatment, Lett says, “The patient needs ideally 4-5 consecutive treatments at monthly intervals, and after those initial ones, 1 visit every six months to maintain results.

Though Pellevé is a great option for many people and the results are truly remarkable, the system is not for everyone.

“If a patient has too much skin laxity, Pellevé won’t be the most efficacious treatment. Surgical intervention may be necessary. Also, patients with internal devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, etc., are not candidates for Pellevé.

Though Pellevé benefits a variety of patients for different reasons, Lett counts the initial tightening of the skin after a treatment among her favorite features.

“The greatest thing about Pellevé is that it can be done on the same day as a special occasion for that quick fix due to that 48 hour of initial tightening that persists.”

Along with receiving Pellevé treatments, drinking lots of water and regularly applying SPF during the summer months is essential to achieving that youthful summer glow we all want during this time of year.

“Drinking water is key in flushing impurities and aiding in overall health as sweat increases.” SPF should be reapplied “every 40-80 minutes without fail and skin will remain protected,” says Lett.

Kristi Lett is a licensed aesthetician and has worked at The Lett Center  for over nine years. Before pursuing her career in aesthetics, Lett earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Social Work degrees and worked in the social work field for many years. Lett is also a certified laser technician and has worked as a freelance make-up artist.

The Lett Center for Plastic Surgery has locations in both Mt. Juliet and Lebanon, Tennessee. The Lett Center offers a variety of services for patients, including reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries and Medi-spa services. For more information about The Lett Center or to book an appointment, visit the thelettcenter.com or call 615-443-0901.

Get Perfect Beach Hair Without the Beach

$
0

By Greer Barnes

Sometimes it seems likes hair has a mind of its own. On the days you want to style your long hair into a sleek ponytail your hair refuses to be anything but frizzy. Maybe you cut your hair into a new short ‘do only to discover you have no idea how to style it. Either way, you’re stuck in a hair rut and you need a way out.

Enter summer beach hair: your answer for an easy, unkempt but still polished look that works for a variety of hair types and lengths. Want to experiment with your hair color without the salon commitment? Channel your inner surfer and subtly highlight your hair the natural way with the help of a little sunshine and a few items you already have in the kitchen.

Make Waves

While you can create tousled waves with a curling iron, there are plenty of ways to create beach hair that don’t require heat. Have long, thick locks? Divide your hair into two loose braids and secure with elastics before bead. Wake up in the morning, remove the elastics, and you’ve got natural waves. Have short or medium length hair? Secure your hair into a bun before bed and in the morning you’ll have voluminous hair worthy of a sea goddess.

Another easy way to achieve beach hair is to apply a sea salt spray while hair is still damp from a shampoo. Sure, you can buy a sea salt spray from the salon or store but the basic ingredients are no farther than your kitchen cabinet.

To create your own sea salt spray, combine 2 cups of distilled water (Simply boil some water and allow it to cool in a container.), 2 tablespoons of sea salt, and 1 to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil in a bowl. If you don’t have coconut oil on hand or if your hair is extremely oily, you can substitute your favorite smoothing serum instead. You need something to nourish your hair since the combination of water and salt is very drying. Empty the contents of the bowl into a small spray bottle (available in any garden supply store) using a funnel and voilà! You have created your very own ocean in a bottle. Spray liberally on damp hair and scrunch using your fingers. Allow to air dry or blow dry on a low heat setting.

Blondes Have More Fun

No, blondes don’t always have more fun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with blonde highlights this summer. You probably know that lemon juice acts a natural bleaching agent, but apple cider vinegar and honey can also lighten hair. For quick highlights, put lemon juice in your hair and allow the sunlight to work its highlighting magic. Shampoo and condition your hair following your soak in the sun to remove the lemon juice.

To lighten and moisturize your hair at the same time, combine one part honey and two parts olive oil in a bowl. To get all-over highlights, comb the mixture throughout your hair. For chunky highlights, saturate half of a cotton ball with the mixture and using your pointer finger and thumb, guide the cotton ball through two-inch sections of hair. Let your hair set in the sun for thirty to sixty minutes and then shampoo and condition. Repeat daily or every other day for more intense highlights.

This summer, hear the call of the wild and be ready! Make the most of your camping adventures with these fun and creative ideas!

1.  No pizza delivery in your neck of the woods? Repurpose your pie iron to create on-the-go pizzas while camping. To avoid mess, wrap the pie iron with foil, allowing toast, pizza and apple pie to taste exactly as they’re meant to.

2.  No space for a tackle box? Use a Tic Tac box instead.

3.  To be both one with nature and keep the mosquitoes away, add sage to the campfire. It will keep you safe and smelling nice.

4.  Nothing beats a warm s’more, right? Wrong! To truly see the stare, add a roasted marshmallow and melted chocolate to an Oreo. You don’t have to be a kid to love this messy goodness.

5.  Make your own stovetop popcorn out of aluminum foil and kernels. Get the direction here. If you’re not so adventurous, you can still have fun by watching the prepackaged stovetop popcorn dance and expand over the fire.

6.  Use paper bags to make delicious breakfasts. Eggs and bacon, anyone? Get the directions here: http://realfamilycamping.blogspot.com/2011/08/paper-bag-eggs-classic-camping-recipe.html

7.  If you’re ever lost in the woods, put them to good use—use an acorn cap to whistle for help. Get the helpful instructions here: http://www.wikihow.com/Whistle-Using-an-Acorn-Cap

8.  Toasted marshmallows are good, but marshmallows dipped in Bailey’s? Great! This food of the gods will keep you wanting its roasted goodness even when you aren’t camping.

9.  Jell-O shots might be a chapter of your life you’d like to forget, but flaming Jell-O marshmallow shots are something you will never forget! Simply fill a marshmallow with Jell-O mixture and dip it in rum. Get the recipe here: http://www.tablespoon.com/recipes/flaming-marshmallow-jelly-shots/26422420-8e87-4b46-9641-5b85f22cf8e2

10.  Bring all the seasonings you’d like without taking up space by filling straws with the mixture and then burning the ends with a lighter. The great thing is that you can reseal them to use later.

11.  Use stackable pill containers to both carry your condiments and seasonings and keep them organized. You can use a marker to label them.

12.  Looking for a savory s’more? Try this on for size! Stuff a mushroom with blue cheese and wrap it in bacon. That’s right—blue cheese filled bacon-wrapped mushroom s’mores. You have to try it to believe it. Get the recipe here: http://www.laurenslatest.com/blue-cheese-filled-bacon-wrapped-mushrooms/

13.  Have any old mint tins lying around? Use them as emergency supply containers for toilet paper, a lighter or pocket knife. If you’re ever lost in the woods or away from the bathroom, you’ll be glad you did.

14.  Need your egg fix while camping? A 16-ounce plastic water bottle can effectively carry 8-9 large eggs. By scrambling them beforehand, you can transport them easily and avoid an unwanted mess.

15.  Forget what you learned about making fires while in the Scouts? No problem! Corn chips, such as Fritos, can make for a wonderful kindling substitute when building a fire.

16.  Need a little light? Make a lantern with a tuna can and a small candle. The foil will help to illuminate the light.

17.  Tired of lugging around tubes of toothpaste? Well now you don’t have to. Squeeze toothpaste into small dots on a paper plate. Let it sit for 2-3 days, then sprinkle with baking soda. Place the toothpaste dots into a re-sealable bag and you now have portable toothpaste without the fuss of a messy tube.

18.  Use a mason jar to make an amazing sangria concentrate worthy of your camping trip. It’s so good, however, you might want to make it anytime. Get the recipe here: http://www.mightymrs.com/recipe-items/camping-sangria/

Now that summer is in full swing it means there are going to be lots of BBQ’s, birthday parties and Fourth of July! For the parties that don’t have their own theme it would be fun to give each event their something creative of their own. Such as a beach, animal, ice cream or sports themed. With different themes for your parties you will be able to make food into different shapes which will help make the theme pop!

One of the best ways to make these parties come alive is to make sure the food is memorable and fun! For a Fourth of July party, everyone will love flag shaped food. For parties that are baseball themed the kids will go crazy for foods shaped as baseball bats or baseballs. No matter what the theme is there is a way to make sure you have food shaped specifically for it. The way to achieve this is by buying cookie cutters; they come in all shapes and sizes and are perfect for all kinds of foods from snacks such as cheese and fruit to sandwiches, salads and desserts. That being said, we found a creative company called Cookie Cutter Kingdom that is all about making cookie cutters that are unique and that you can customize to fit any event. They use 3D printing and 3D modeling technology to give you thousands of cookie cutter designs and have a variety of sizes.

The best thing about cookie cutters is that they are easy to use and clean. There are about three steps to creating great food with cookie cutters. First step is to make the food, whether it is making sandwiches or cutting up the fruit. Second step is to use the cookie cutters and press them into the food. Then finally pull off the excess food and there you go! You now have your perfect food for the party. The great thing about purchasing cookie cutters from the Cookie Cutter Kingdom is that their website even has recipes and guides for you to use, free of charge if you need an extra push to get started.

Philanthropic Panties That Hold Your Period. No, Seriously.

Most women would agree that Mother Nature’s monthly gift is more of a curse, so what would you say if we told you that there’s a better way to power through your period? Sounds impossible, right? Don’t worry, we were a bit skeptical at first too. But then this happened.

We discovered THINX, a serious game-changer in the world of period panties. Modern women are ditching their dingy drawers complete with period stains and opting to go tampon and pad free. That’s right – there’s a revolutionary underwear that virtually eliminates the need to wear any menstruation products except for a pair of THINX ultra-absorbent skivvies.

Imagine no more secret trips to the bathroom with a tampon up your sleeve or tucked away in your pocket. No more digging for a quarter to purchase a pad last minute in the ladies room when Flo comes to town unscheduled. No more hiding the fact that you were born with ovaries, goddammit! It’s time for women to embrace their period and enjoy the possibility of freedom associated with THINX. Let’s open up to this idea, shall we?

THINX’s period-proof panties work like this: four layers of patented technology including a moisture-wicking top layer that keeps you feeling dry, followed by an anti-microbial layer that fights bacteria, a third layer that holds up to 2 tampons worth of liquid (depending on style) and finally a leak-resistant layer that vows to keep even the whitest pants white during your period. No, seriously, THINX says they’re safe, so they’re safe. And no ladies, they aren’t like diapers. You won’t be sitting in a pool of your own blood as if it were a 10-hour-old pad on your heaviest day. The four layers are expertly designed to give you a clean, dry feeling. All. Day. Long.

THINX is also wildly aware that no woman wants to wear granny panties during her period, which is why they created three styles that are actually worth wearing – thong, cheeky and hiphugger. And what’s better – you don’t have to change them throughout the day depending on your flow. Just simply use, hand wash, dry and reuse.

thinx2

Unlike most of our trusty tampon and pad brands that are run by men, THINX is a labor of love by two sisters and a friend at the helm. Twin sisters Miki and Radha Agrawal of NYC along with Antonia Dunbar are striving to put an end to the taboo mysteries of menstruation by allowing women to embrace a more relaxed, stress-free period. The product, made at a female, family-run factory in Sri Lanka, is committed to reinventing feminine hygiene products to accommodate all women around the world.

In fact, when you purchase a pair of panties by THINX, they send funds to their partner, AFRIpads, to help girls and women in Uganda who may not have accessible menstrual supplies otherwise. In under-developed countries such as Uganda, having your period doesn’t just mean bleeding for a few days. It can be a life-threatening scenario for women who either don’t have sanitary products or are using ineffective products that can result in leakages and even infections. And we all know the shame and utter embarrassment associated with leaking in public (high-school flashbacks, anyone?).

thinx3

THINX is taking philanthropy to a new level by providing these women not with hand-outs, but with life-changing tools and resources to make them self-sufficient when it comes to their cycle. Missing school or work is a common disadvantage for these women during their period, causing them to fall behind in their studies or ability to provide for their families. Thanks to THINX co-founders, they are addressing this problem through every pair of panties sold.

Still skeptical? Tell us why in the comment section below.
