5 Tips for Making the Most of Summertime Family Travel

$

Most families eagerly await the summer travel season as an opportunity to get out and enjoy the warm weather, explore new areas, and spend time together engaging in fun activities. But for families with a new baby, the summer travel season suddenly becomes a lot more complicated. Is it too ambitious to plan a vacation with a baby? What will the travel experience be like? And what to do with all that gear?

But sharing your life with a beautiful new baby doesn’t mean that you need to remain housebound until the toddler years arrive – or that you have to say good-bye to your adventuresome spirit. With the official arrival of summer, the baby care experts at WaterWipes have put together some tips on how new parents can celebrate both their new addition – and the summer season.

  • Embark on the Great Grandparent Tour: No one on the planet wants to see the new baby and you – in that order – more than the new grandparents. So planning a trip home, or to see other close relatives, can be a great way to spend a long summer weekend, while ensuring that you’ll have plenty of people willing to lend a hand. Plus, as most grandparents prove to be more than willing babysitters, you may even be able to sneak out for a grown-up dinner or two.
  • Keep it Manageable: If you do decide to venture out to a vacation destination – beyond the family visit – try to keep it easy on yourself and your baby. Even for experienced travelers, this may not be the time for an overnight international flight or “roughing it” for two weeks in a rustic cabin. Instead, try for a destination not too far from home and search for accommodations that offer up some flexibility – for example, cooking facilities if you don’t want to eat out at a restaurant every night.
  • Stay Cool in the Summer Sun: As much as we enjoy warm weather, it can be tough on everyone’s skin – but especially for a new baby. WaterWipes, the world’s only chemical-free baby wipes, can be comforting on a new baby’s skin during the hot summer months, as they contain only two ingredients: 99.9% water and a tiny droplet of fruit extract. They also can help avoid diaper rash and won’t irritate other sensitive skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Before venturing out on a warm day, toss your pack of WaterWipes in the refrigerator so you can soothe and refresh your baby with a cool wipe during your outing.
  • Talk to Other Moms: Experienced Moms can be a great resource when contemplating a vacation with a new baby, so get the scoop from your Mom friends about what works and what doesn’t for your first vacation as a family. From diaper bag essentials to what to bring along on a car trip, Moms-in-the-know can be the difference between a successful trip and one that leaves you longing for the comforts of home.
  • Streamline Travel Gear: Between shower gifts and baby presents, new parents now have more baby gear than they ever thought possible. But the thought of bringing it all along on vacation can be enough to deter the most eager traveler. Instead, start streamlining by focusing on the products you use daily. Moreover, cutting down the quantity of what you bring can be another way to lighten the load, as many baby products, such as WaterWipes, come in travel sizes, which can easily be tossed into a travel bag.

6 Must-have Manuals for a Stepmom’s Survival in a Blended Family

By Dana DeMercurio

Thanks to popular fairytales like Cinderella and Snow White, stepmothers have gotten a seriously bad rap for being evil, villainous and downright cruel to their stepchildren. But stepping into this new role in a blended family isn’t easy on a woman! Finding the right parenting methods, having courage under fire and dealing with the (often times dreaded) ex can take a serious toll on a stepmom’s ability to survive and thrive as a wife and stepparent. For those seeking some outside help, here’s our list of top manuals to guide stepmoms through the rough patches of their role.

1.  “The Everything Guide to Stepparenting,” by Erin Munroe with Irene S. Levine, Ph.D.

book1

This comprehensive stepparenting manual is at the top of the list for a reason! With 21 chapters beginning with “dating a parent” to “moving in” to “getting married” to “rules and disciple for your infant, toddler, young, teen or adult stepchild,” this book truly is the “everything guide” to stepparenting. Learning how to build an emotional bond with a stepchild while creating boundaries is the common thread that links the chapters together, along with tackling the different personalities and behaviors of children who may or may not recognize their new stepmom as an authority figure. There’s even an “unforeseen problems” chapter that addresses situations such as biological parent illness or death and extreme behavioral issues of a stepchild.

2.  “Teach Yourself: Successful Step-Parenting,” by Suzie Hayman

book2

Being a stepmom isn’t all about the kids according to therapist, author and stepmom Suzie Hayman. In this practical guide to stepparenting, Hayman introduces the importance of family communication, how to balance different and often times conflicting points of view between family members and dispelling the myths associated with being a stepmom or stepparent. Hayman plainly states that “love does not conquer all and love and good intention alone may not be enough to secure a good relationship in the face of the stress and pressure of stepfamily issues.” She does believe, however, that love is always a great foundation, but to be a successful stepfamily, all members will need understanding, patience and serious effort.

3.  “But I’m Not a Wicked Stepmother! Secrets of Successful Blended Families,” by Kathi Lipp and Carol Boley

book3

Written by two fun-loving and God-fearing stepmoms, Lipp and Boley provide real-life experiences in their down-to-earth book on how to love and care for other people’s children. After doing research for their book, these ladies learned that “second marriages only stand a 40 percent chance of survival…[we] want to improve not only your chances of survival as a stepmother but also your enjoyment of and satisfaction in the role.” Their secrets to stepmothering success include “believing you are a valuable gift to your family,” staying flexible and understanding your role as an authority figure. To learn more, click the image below.

4.  “A Career Girl’s Guide to Becoming a Stepmom,” by Jacquelyn Fletcher

book4

Professional turned wife – it happens all the time! What’s so scary about that? Stepkids, that’s what! Fletcher’s what-to-expect guide draws from her personal experience on stepping into a new role as both wife and stepmother all while juggling a career. Readers will take away lessons on how to utilize their professional behavior at work and translate that into methods used for stepparenting, such as team-building, organization and goal-setting. It’s an easy read geared toward women who currently have no children but are considering boarding the stepparent ship full steam ahead. Its positive and upbeat tone is refreshing, thanks to the absence of ex and/or kid-bashing that so many other books include.

5.  “Stepping-Stones for Stepmoms: Everyday Strength for Blended Family Moms,” by Karon Phillips Goodman

book5

Christian-life author Karon Phillips Goodman offers stories of strength, quotes of encouragement, uplifting prayers and inspiring stories for fellow stepmothers in her guide book for blended family moms. Whether women are in need of spiritual or emotional healing, restful and refreshing direction, or simply looking for helpful tips on marriage and stepparenting, Goodman’s book provides ample support for all kinds of moms.

6.  “Stepmonster: A New Look at Why Real Stepmothers Think, Feel, and Act the Way We Do” by Wednesday Martin

book6

The realities of being a stepmom are excellently pinpointed in Martin’s true-to-life book about emotions associated with stepparening, including anger, confusion and resentment. Martin includes interviews with fellow stepmoms and their stepchildren, along with drawing from vast pools of research in psychology, literature, anthropology and evolutionary biology. Martin truly unpacks the mysteries of being a stepmother and lightens the load for readers experiencing mixed emotions about their new role in a blended family. Her approach to stepparenting advice may seem unorthodox to readers, as she brings to light ugly truths such as “step kids are as unessential to stepmoms as stepmoms are to them.” In the end, Martin’s goal is to open the door to a conversation that is often overlooked in society and within blended families – and she does so successfully.

Five Ways to Grow Your Child’s Love of Reading This Summer

Contributed by Maia Haag, www.iseeme.com

You can avoid the summer slide by helping your little one blossom into a reader this summer. Here are five tips to inspire your child’s love of reading. After all, children who love reading live happier ever after!

Keep books with you
According to author Emilie Buchwald, “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” Find a few spare pockets of time during the day to read your child a book. Having books handy in your car, throughout your home, or in your bag will remind you to make time for reading.

Turn It Off!
Slash TV time! Encourage reading as another form of entertainment. Invest in a bookmark with a timer so that your child can keep track of how many minutes are spent reading each day.

Make Your Child the Star of the Story!
Every child loves being the star of his or her own storybook. Personalized books from www.iseeme.com feature the child’s name throughout the story. Having your kids play a role in the books they read will make them feel special.

iseeme1           iseeme2

Read In Front of Your Child!
Children love to emulate their parents. Make sure your child sees you reading the newspaper, books, magazines, etc. When your child sees you reading, he or she is sure to want to be just like mommy or daddy.

Take a Trip!
Visit your local library once a week. Young children love going on field trips and it is fun to spend time selecting new books. It’s also a great way to beat summer heat—and it’s free! Also, many libraries have free summer reading programs available to kids of all ages.

For more inspiration for developing a love of reading in your child, visit I See Me!’s Pinterest Board, Inspire a Love of Reading, at: http://pinterest.com/iseemebooks/inspire-a-love-of-reading/.

Shake Up Your Style with a Statement Necklace

By Greer Barnes

While summer is a time to relax with friends and family and enjoy the warm sunshine, it’s also the prime time to forget about fashion altogether, throw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and call it a day. Yes, it gets hot and yes, you’re busy with other things, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put a little extra effort into your look. Sometimes the extra “something” that elevates your look is as simple as a statement necklace.

And no, we’re not talking about your mother’s statement necklace. Gone are the big, gaudy beads of the past. Instead, simple, chic, art-inspired designs are sweeping the runways and streets. The best part is you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to amp up your outfit! These necklaces only look expensive. Here are our picks for the best summer trends and online finds for summer statement necklaces:

Pretty Pendants

This Pendant Pending Necklace ($24.99) from Modcloth combines two of summer’s hottest jewelry trends: the “layered look” and the pendant. Pair this simple gold-chained necklace with a simple top and jeans for a pretty but relaxed look.

necklace1

Another hot trend is the rock pendant. Opt for a rock pendant necklace made of natural materials for a folk-art inspired look, or go for a more glamorous style with this Dabby Reid ‘Elizabeth’ Stone Pendant Necklace ($68.00) from Nordstrom. Pair it with a white peasant top, flared jeans, and wedges for a modern twist on a ‘70s look.

necklace2

Art Deco Designs

Take a cue from the world of1920s art and architecture with a simple but glamorous art deco-inspired necklace like this Deco Statement Necklace ($39.95) from Sole Society. The sharp lines, symmetrical shapes, and simple gold chain keep this necklace from looking too busy despite its intricate pattern. Pair it with a simple shift dress and heels for a night on the town.

necklace3

Tasteful Tassels

You’re probably thinking, “How can I wear tassels and not look a DIY project gone wrong?” Tassels are actually easier to wear than you think. Ease into the trend by choosing a necklace with neutral tassels like the Vivid Verve Necklace ($24.99) from Modcloth. The long chain chain and the faux turquoise stone complete the ‘70s vibe. Wear the necklace with a maxi dress and sandals for an outdoor family get-together.

As far as dining is concerned, Harborwalk Village truly has you covered! For a mouthwatering experience, visit Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi, the epitome of a good living while in Destin. The restaurant is named after legendary Destin Charter Boat Captain Dale Beebe, who took a charter to the “local’s fishing area” in search of the famed amberjacks the area had been known for. On the trip, however, Beebe managed to catch only barracuda. When he jokingly referred to the fish as Jackacuda, a legend was born! All the other captains began taking charters to the area in search of Jackacuda. With Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi, the same thrill and expectation of fishing at one of Destin’s famous fishing holes is now available for all those who “charter” a trip to the restaurant for seafood and setting. The ambience of Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi is rightly styled after the inviting manner in which locals brought friends, family and tourists to their secret fishing spots. With its relaxed environment, the restaurant beckons customers to enjoy the familial comforts of friends and food, as well as award-winning flavors.

jackacudas1

The menu at Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi is both eclectic and impressive. The restaurant’s sous chef, James Cooke, will delight your palette with wonderfully decadent creations, such as the Fried Avocado, T’s Mac N Cheese with Bacon and Smoked Gouda, the Chorizo Crusted Snapper, the Blackened Fresh Seasonal Fish with Caramelized Pineapple Butter and the House made Cheesecake with seasonal topping. As far as the sushi is concerned, executive sushi chef Efrain Tirado combines global culinary traditions with West Coast influence to produce unique, mouthwatering works of art for the palette. The restaurant also has an impressive drink menu, including international beer, wine and sake. If you’re lucky, you might be waited on by Ryan, an all-around swell guy who knows the entire menu at Jackacudas.

If you want to dine like a local, also try Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer, Jackacuda’s sister restaurant. Brotula’s has a local fishing hole history similar to Jackacuda’s, and offers a range of dishes to ensure good times and great taste. Try the Bro’s Clam Bake or the Conecuh Potato Crusted Red Snapper, a fan favorite.

Margaritaville Destin also offers guests gluten-free and vegetarian menus, so families who have children with food allergies can rest assured that their child’s needs are being met! With such care and carefully crafted food, it’s no wonder that this restaurant is a crowd favorite. Dine with ease and enjoy the good life at Margaritaville Destin!

Guilt-Free Parenting Shortcuts

By Dana DeMercurio

Regardless of whatever parenting style or parenting rules you thought you’d employ as a mom, sometimes you have to toss them out the window and rejoice in the fact that there is always a suitable alternative for you and your family. A mom wears many hats, and switching them out is pretty simple when it comes down to it. Here’s what we mean:

For “short-order cook” moms – You swore you’d never feed leftovers or frozen meals to your family. Meals from scratch would be your forte, and your kids would receive whatever meal their heart desired. Ah, what a quaint idea. For many working (and even stay-at-home) moms, this must sound like a complete nightmare. No one will grill you if you happen to serve a frozen meal one or two nights a week. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s why frozen foods are much more advanced and nutritious than they once were. Find low sodium options when choosing a meal for your family in the frozen-foods aisle, or pick up a bag of frozen ravioli or equivalent and simply add your favorite sauce. Even add frozen veggies as a quick side. Trust us, your kids won’t know the difference.

For “referee” moms – When your kids start fighting in the back seat over which radio station to listen to on the way to school, or when a sibling’s “borrowed” item goes missing and it becomes World War III, you swore you would be there to referee the situation and squash the constant juvenile bickering between them. Well, we’re here to say that letting your kids hash it out among themselves isn’t all that bad. Think about it: if you were mad and wanted to voice your opinion but where constantly told to “grow up” or “shut up,” it probably wouldn’t help your level of anger or annoyance. Sometimes it’s best to let your kids experience a heated debate followed by time to reflect upon the situation. Bring your children together after an argument and ask questions about their feelings and offer constructive solutions to their problems. Because pent up anger isn’t healthy for any member of your family, regardless of age.

For “clean freak” moms – “The kids will have their own playroom. The living room will stay clear of all toys and messes.” Quick question: how’s that working out for you? We can guess probably not that great. Kids make messes, it’s inevitable. Don’t limit their fun to just one room. Instead, reinforce your home with storage that is easily accessible for your kids and (more importantly) easy on the eyes, such as a toy chest or a pull-out storage unit with baskets for behind the couch. This way your child won’t feel alienated to one room in the house, and you won’t be stepping on Legos or Barbie Doll shoes when walking through the living room. It’s a win-win for everyone, even clean freaks.

For “no tech, no way!” moms – No video games, no TV and definitely no smart phones. That’s how you planned to raise your children. First of all, kudos for trying. Secondly, it’s impossible –which come to find out isn’t a terrible thing. According to KidsHealth.org, “TV in moderation can be a good thing: preschoolers can get help learning the alphabet on public television, grade-schoolers can learn about wildlife on nature shows, and parents can keep up with current events on the evening news. No doubt about it — TV can be an excellent educator and entertainer.” The operative word being “moderation” of course. Public programming and other quality educational media (academic video games, educational smart-phone apps) can be an amazing tool for children ages two and up. So try not to be a stickler and simply monitor your child’s daily consumption of media by limiting it to one to two hours a day.

The “dress to impress” moms – “I’ll never let my child out the house in a wrinkled pair of shorts or mismatched socks,” you said. “One must always be ready to make a good impression.” Again, kudos for trying. We hate to burst your bubble, but kids will be kids, and when you’re 10 minutes late leaving the house and little Bobby can’t find a freshly-pressed t-shirt, you’ll be retracting that statement before you know it. Parents aren’t perfect and neither are children. Caring too much about outward appearance can set a risky precedent for your child’s future, so letting him/her leave the house with purple socks and green shoes really won’t be the worst thing to happen in fashion. Give your kids options in the morning when getting dressed, and if their shirt isn’t wrinkle-free because it’s been sitting in a pile of clean clothes that haven’t yet been folded, just blame in on the seatbelt.

See, there’s always wiggle room.

Making the Most out of Your Doctor’s Visits

By Dana DeMercurio

Whether prenatal, postnatal or simply popping in for a routine checkup, making the most out of your personal doctor’s visits is easier than you might think. Here are some simple ways to get involved with your health with the cooperative effort of your physician.

Ask for a urine sample

Testing urine is actually an excellent way of examining kidney function that can forecast the probability of certain diseases, including cardiovascular, kidney and heart disease. In a recent study, researchers found that a simple urine screening to track kidney function acts as a better predictor than standard risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking. Kidney.org suggest asking your doctor about Albumin Creatinine Ratio (ACR) which estimates the amount of protein and albumin currently in your urine. Who knew checking your pee could be such a lifesaver?

Check your thyroid

Feeling fatigued? Suffer from constipation, hair loss, depression, weight gain or shortened eyebrows? That last symptom might sound strange, but these are all warning signs of a “lazy” thyroid. Your thyroid is your body’s master metabolism hormone, and when it functions abnormally, it can throw your body completely out of whack. An underperforming thyroid (hypothyroidism) causes an overall “slowing down” of many bodily functions, and nearly 27 million people suffer from a thyroid condition such as this. A simple TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone test is usually used to detect thyroid function, and can prove to be a helpful and easy blood test for those looking to make seriously lifestyle changes to improve their health. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor about this test if your overall health is poor and suspect your thyroid is to blame.

Test your blood glucose level for diabetes

According to a 2014 analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of gestational diabetes is as high as 9.2. Gestational diabetes differs from Type 1 or 2 diabetes in that it can come to an end after giving birth. Diabetes, whether gestational, prediabetes or adult onset, can be diagnosed through several different doctor’s tests, including hemoglobin A1C, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The advantages of selecting an AC1 test is that no fasting is required, and it measures your average blood glucose level over the past 2 to 3 months. Testing your blood glucose level provides powerful information about your risk for diabetes. Stay on top of your health and prevent or delay your chances by staying active, eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight. To learn more about diabetes prevention, symptoms and diagnosis, visit Diabetes.org

Learn your lifetime virus and infection history

With just a simple blood test and $25 in your pocket, patients can find out their entire health history thanks to a cutting-edge medical test called VirScan. Here’s how it works: VirScan screens a patient’s single drop of blood for antibodies against over 200 different viruses and infections known to infect humans. Stephen Elledge, a Howard Hughes Medical Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led the development of VirScan, and believes the test to be groundbreaking in the medical field. “We’ve developed a screening methodology to basically look back in time in people’s [blood] sera and see what viruses they have experienced,” he says. “Instead of testing for one individual virus at a time, which is labor intensive, we can assay all of these at once. It’s one-stop shopping.” VirScan not only identifies past viruses but can detect viral infections that a patient’s immune system is currently working to fight off. Elledge and his colleagues have tested this technology on over 500 people in the United States, South Africa, Thailand and Peru. To read about their findings in the June edition of Science medical journal or learn more about VirScan, visit ScienceMag.org.

Late-Night Snacking Is All in Your Head…Kind of.

By Dana DeMercurio

It’s 2a.m. and you’re standing in the kitchen, bathrobe flung wide open, tearing through a carton of Häagen- Dazs, devouring an industrial-size box of Cheez Its, sliding a plate of leftovers in the microwave or (perhaps even and) slathering mustard and mayo on a submarine roll layered with cold cuts and deli cheese. It’s not that you’re hungry per se, but you’ve got nothing better to do. Chances are you’re a chronic late-night snacker, and now we’ve learned the reason why.

According to new research out of Brigham Young University, the brain is to blame for those late night or early morning cravings. The study reveals that the human brain is less sensitive to the rewards that food gives us in those wee hours, thus leading to potential face-stuffing expeditions and brazen overeating when we should be sleeping.

The study, which was published in the journal Brain Imaging and Behavior, used MRIs to measure how people’s brains react to an array of food images at different times throughout the day. The ironic bit? Researchers used only female participants in their study.

15 women viewed 360 images of food, once in the morning and once a day later in the evening, on two separate occasions. Subjects viewed images of low-calorie foods such as fruits, vegetables and fish along with high-calorie foods including fast food and sugary sweets. Results found that all participants displayed greater neural reaction in their MRIs when looking at high-calorie foods, yet the evening scans showed a much lower response to both categories of food images in areas of the brain that measure rewards.

In an email interview with The Huffington Post, Travis Masterson, lead author and researcher at BYU, stated this about the study’s findings: “You might over-consume at night because food is not as rewarding, at least visually, at that time of day. You eat more to try to get satisfied.” It turns out, midnight snackers are falling into the vicious cycle of overeating in an attempt to get that same food high or reward they get when eating during the day. The effect, Masterson said, is much like that of gamblers, drug addicts or alcoholics all looking for a similar high.

Participants were told to avoid eating or drinking for a number of hours before each MRI session. Despite maintaining the same diet on all days of the study, a large portion of the participants stated that they were more preoccupied with thoughts of food in the later hours of the day and believed that they could eat more (that oh-so-familiar “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” situation).

“Being aware that you are being more influenced visually in the morning and perhaps are being less satisfied by food at night may help you to make small but meaningful changes in your eating habits,” Masterson stated.

In the future, if you find yourself awake at midnight and lying in bed drooling at the thought of a gluttonous journey to the kitchen resulting in what can only be characterized as a shameful display of raging female hormones, just repeat this mantra: “Not today, Temptation. Not today.”

How to Look Wide Awake on No Sleep

By Greer Barnes

We’ve all experienced a night’s sleep that wasn’t exactly “heavenly peace”. Perhaps the stress of your new job kept you tossing and turning all night. Maybe your allergies finally got the best of you, leaving you restless despite the nine hours you spent in bed. Either way you’re left with the same result: tired, puffy eyes and deep, dark under eye circles that seem impossible to mask.

Any old concealer won’t be enough to disguise those pesky eye problems. You need a simple but effective way to cover those dark circles and better yet, get rid of them once and for all. Lucky for you, we’ve got your three-step plan to brighter, younger-looking eyes: prep, conceal, and treat.

Prep

Prepping your eye area with an eye mask or a soothing eye gel can reduce swelling, instantly making your eyes appear brighter. Opt for products with ingredients like cucumber and aloe vera, like Estee Lauder Stress Relief Eye Masks, for an extra surge of healing power. Apply these pre-moistened, hydrating pads under each eye after washing your face, go about your normal morning routine, and remove the pads before you apply your makeup. Now your concealer will only have to do half the work.

StressReliefEyeMasks

Conceal

While an eye mask can work wonders, chances are your dark circles are still noticeable. Tilt your head down slightly and find the exact locations of your dark circles. Do you have dark spots that extend down your face? Are the inner corners of your eyes especially dark? Using your ring finger or a small brush, apply a yellow-based concealer where you need it. Try a concealer like the Philosophy ‘Miracle Worker’ if your eyes look particularly tired. This corrector-concealer duo comes with a correcting color that will brighten and disguise lines and dark marks and a concealer that will blur any discoloration.

tiredeyes2

Need a drugstore option that won’t break the bank? Give the Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Dark-Circle Roller a try. The caffeine gel formula stimulates the eye area while providing a sheer tint of color to reduce the appearance of dark circles. Keep this baby in your purse for those days when you don’t have time to apply a full face of makeup but need an eye-brightening boost.

tiredeyes3

Treat

Taking care of the delicate skin around your eyes is an important part of your daily skincare routine. Try applying cult favorite Lancome ‘Genifique Yeux’ Youth Activating Eye Cream morning and night. Its gel-like formula is easy-to-apply and makes your eyes look more youthful by brightening the eye area and fighting wrinkles.

tiredeyes4

Have sensitive skin that breaks out when you apply a potent product? Give Roc Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream a try. This cream contains retinol, a powerful wrinkle-fighter, but the formula is mild enough for people who are sensitive to retinol or have never used an eye cream. Use this product under your makeup and with sunscreen.

AMERICANS ARE FLUNKING FITNESS CLASS

Survey Reveals Lack of Basic Diet and Exercise Knowledge

VANCOUVER, Wash., July 30, 2015 – Americans talk a good health and fitness game, but they are flunking out when it comes to their actual knowledge. A new survey from Nautilus, Inc. (NYSE: NLS) found that Americans are failing in basic fitness, health and nutrition smarts. In fact, respondents scored 42 percent overall. If this survey were a class test, they’d have earned an F grade.

The Nautilus survey, powered by Instantly Survey Tool, questioned 1,038 men and women in the United States ages 18 and older in April 2015 to gauge Americans’ acumen when it comes to nutrition, health and fitness.

No matter what an individual’s health and fitness goals may be, understanding the fundamentals should be simple.

Of those surveyed, 74 percent didn’t know the correct daily sugar intake for adults (25 grams) or the number of calories needed to burn to lose a pound of fat (3,500). There was also a lot of misunderstanding about weight training for women — only 13 percent knew the truth: that it won’t add bulk, lead to a masculine physique or increase chest size.

When taking into account the overall percentage of correct answers, the lack of knowledge was fairly comparable across age and gender, although the younger generation outsmarted its elders:

  • 48 percent — young adults (18-24 yrs.) scored the highest as a group.
  • 36 percent — seniors (65+ yrs.) as a group, performed at the bottom.
  • 42 percent — men and women were equally misinformed.

The survey revealed that common misperceptions about health, diet and exercise persist. For example:

  • 45 percent thought that weight training turns fat into muscle.
  • There was confusion over healthy protein choices, as only 39 percent of people surveyed understood that eggs are a heart-healthy source of protein.
  • As for the best time of day to get the most effective workout? Forty-five percent selected morning, but the truth is that just about any time, including afternoon or evening, is equally as good.

The results highlight that while there is plenty of room for improvement, there are several bright spots. Many Americans surveyed (73 percent) know that walking a mile or running a mile doesn’t burn the same number of calories; while 67 percent understand that resting heart rate is a good indicator of aerobic fitness. More than half (57 percent) correctly identified examples of functional fitness exercises.

“This survey clearly shines a light on the confusion that remains and demonstrates that there are still improvements to be made in enabling people to make informed choices,” said Bruce Cazenave, CEO of Nautilus. “At Nautilus, we focus on inspiring others to pursue a healthy lifestyle, encouraging them to engage in a fitness plan they can stick with and offering products to support their efforts.”

Have You Ever Wanted To Get Paid To Speak?

Here Are The First 3 Things You’ll Need To Do

TED talks, YouTube rants and Mr. Peanut, the mascot for Planters Peanuts, are all signs of just how highly valued the art of oratory is today.

“Yep, even Mr. Peanut can be seen in Planters ads giving TED-style presentations; people are spending top dollar to attend a well-presented speech with useful information from an inspired perspective, and the best speakers may be regarded fairly as today’s rock stars,” says expert speaker coach Jane Atkinson, author of “The Wealthy Speaker 2.0” (speakerlauncher.com).

“The ability to command a fee is a sign that you’ve made it as a speaker. However, as with rock stars, it’s a long way to the top if you’re just starting. But if you have something to offer then you can reach that fee status, and there’s a reliable path to follow.”

Atkinson outlines the three phases to becoming a paid speaker.

•  Ready. “Picking a lane” in your topic is the first step to becoming not only a paid speaker, but a wealthy one, too. Ask yourself the questions, “What topic do I want to be known for five years from now?” and “Will someone pay me for that information?” When looking to hire a speaker to deliver a keynote speech for a conference, who will be picked from a pool of experts – a jack of all trades or someone who hits the center of the bull’s-eye on a topic? When picking a lane, consider delving into topics including leadership, engagement, corporate culture or communication. This is the phase in which you’ll want to really develop your bona fides, including your material and establishing the goal of how you’d like to help your audience.

•  Aim. Here is the marketing phase that cannot be underappreciated. It includes aspects like your website and what you do to drive traffic there, which may include a well-written blog with relevant content, and media exposure. However, the most important way to market yourself is to do a truly excellent job with your actual speech. A good speech for a speaker is like a great pastry for a baker – a quality product speaks volumes itself. There is no better form of marketing than a great speech. Therefore, if you think your speech could use help, take care of it right away. No amount of marketing dollars, no fancy Facebook page and no ultra-cool website can overcome a mediocre presentation. However, when you market yourself, you’ll want to include a number of materials, including your brand, promise statement, photos, a bio illustrating credibility, testimonials and more.

•  Fire. Now, you need to identify your target market and determine the best method to reach them. You need to roll out your product and continue to build momentum. Be ready to fire your message to your target market via a public relations campaign strategy. There are multiple ways of effectively getting good attention from the media, but don’t believe all attention is good attention. Carefully consider your press releases. Atkinson says the mistake most speakers make is sending out a press release that does not answer the question: “So what?” They don’t tie it to anything relevant into which the press can sink their teeth. Another way to “fire” is to identify your ideal customer, also called the The Attraction Method, as detailed in the book, “Attracting Perfect Customers: The Power of Strategic Synchronicity” by Stacy Hall and Jan Brogniez.

“If you feel as though you have something to offer audiences via oral presentations, then you probably do,” Atkinson says. “These days, so much content can be had for free online, but that doesn’t take the place of a live experiential presentation. A presentation that is ‘epic’ will remain in your memory for years. The ability to present your content live, and make the presentation worthwhile and relevant, means you can earn a reliable stream of revenue based on what you’re good at.”

The Pros and Cons of Switching to Menstrual Cups

$
0
0

By Dana DeMercurio

We are all familiar with the functionality of a cup. You know, the kind you drink your green juice from. But not every woman is familiar with the kind that gets inserted and acts as a catch-all during that time of the month. On that note, here are some pros and cons of using menstrual cups as part of your monthly feminine hygiene routine.

Pros:

  • It’s Perfect for Forgetful Females

Making sure you leave the house with your purse packed to the brim with tampons or pads is quite the feat for some of our scatterbrained sisters (you know who you are). With a menstrual cup, you just need the one. Imagine: no awkward bathroom encounters begging strangers for a tampon, no improvised pads made from layered toilet paper, no mad dash to your local drug store only to spend money on products already filling your under-the-counter bathroom space at home. Harness your forgetfulness for something more advantageous, like forgetting you just ate a pound of chocolate with a side of Cheetos washed down with a strawberry margarita.

  • It’s a Serious Money-saver

Menstrual cups are reusable. I repeat, they are reusable. While most manufacturers claim the cups can be used for up to one year, some eco-sites claim that with proper maintenance and care, one cup can last up to 10 years. If you’re not imagining yourself swimming in a lake of dollar bills you could be saving every month, then perhaps you’re grossly unaware of just how much you spend on feminine hygiene products per year. Menstrual cups average $30, while a box of 18 Tampax Pearl tampons cost roughly $4. You do the math.

  • 10 Hours of Carefree Living

Of course, this varies depending on individual flow, but menstrual cups are meant to provide 10 to 12 hours of coverage, ultimately requiring less trips to the bathroom to make sure you’re not gushing through your favorite pair of jeans. Unlike tampons that need to be changed every eight hours, menstrual cups need to be emptied and cleaned just twice a day, as they can hold nearly five times more than tampons or pads. And the clincher: there’s no risk of toxic shock syndrome associated with menstrual cups, as these devices are non-absorbent.

  • Your Vagina Will Thank You for “Going Green”

Pads and tampons all contain harmful chemicals that are known to create health concerns among their users, including bleached rayon, a material that has the potential to create the cancer-causing byproduct dioxin. If the thought of shoving these products “up there” makes your vagina tightened up like a clam, then menstrual cups may be the right alternative for you. Cups are latex, BPA and additive free – just make sure to purchase the 100% silicone style. And because there is virtually no waste associated with cups as opposed to the billions of tampons and pads currently populating our landfills and sewer systems, you’re easily doing your part to help keep the planet green. For this, your vagina deserves an award. Perhaps a new pair of panties?

Cons:

  • It Can Get a Bit Messy

There’s a bit of an “ick factor” associated with emptying a menstrual cup, especially in public restrooms. There’s always a chance of spilling associated with cup use. It’s imperative that the cup be rinsed and properly cleaned after every use, which can also pose issues for those not near a water source. If you’re the kind of woman who lets her dirty dishes sit in the sink for weeks on end without a second thought, you may want to think twice about starting a routine with menstrual cups as upkeep and proper care are essential with this product.

  • Finding the Right Size

Menstrual cups are much like McDonald’s French fries: they come in small, medium and large. Finding the proper fit may be a struggle for some new users, and requires you to get up close and personal with your ladyparts. Be sure to check the size chart when making a purchase or seek advice from your gynecologist.

  • Insertion Issues and Difficulties

For women using an IUD or those who’ve never had intercourse, cup insertion may be a bit more difficult and painful. In order to not damage or disrupt the IUD, consult with your OB/GYN about the best methods for menstrual cup use. Be advised that breaking an intact hymen is also possible when using a cup, so be gentle and don’t force it in.

Keep your family safe from identity theft

$

Kids and technology go hand-in-hand when it comes to family vacations. But before you let your child connect to that airport Wi-Fi, or search on your phone – you should know these key tips that will help keep you safe from identity theft.

Experian’s ProtectMyID has key tips for families this vacation season – related to on-the-go technology and risks.

Get your Own: Consider a portable router to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot for your family?s devices. You?ll need a local SIM data card, which is available at most electronic stores or even airport kiosks. This will help you avoid using public Wi-Fi Spots.

Don’t Welcome Hackers: When you use a public Wi-Fi, make sure you are logging into secured/private networks. If you must use public Wi-Fi, be very cautious of using unsecured networks. Hackers have a better chance of accessing your login details and any credit card information you may have entered on an unsecured network.

Be Careful about Being Social: Using social media while you travel can be a great way to share highlights from your family?s trip but remember- checking in or posting pictures can alert someone that your home is vacant. If you really want to share these photos, make sure to set your privacy settings on your FB page to ?friends? only. However the best option is to delay posts until you are back home to limit the number of people who actually see these pictures.

Make Sure it?s Legit: Before logging onto a website from your mobile device, make sure theURLs are legit. There are plenty of URL spoof sites out there, created in order to steal your information. Unfortunately mobile browsers do not show the URL, so it is best to bookmark your favorite sites after you type in the address.

Think Twice About Tweeting: Twitter is just as target-friendly by hackers as other social media accounts like Facebook, therefore be conservative in what you reveal through your Twitter account. Tweeting your goodbyes or elaborating on how long you?ll be out of town or where you are going is not a good idea.

Guard your social networks: If you have a blog or social accounts, such as Facebook and Twitter, use the highest security settings possible to ensure your information, posts and photos aren?t being leaked onto the Internet.

Use strong passwords: Use a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, symbols and punctuation to make your passwords harder to crack.

Protect your mobile devices: Losing your mobile phone, a thumb drive or laptop can be just as bad as losing your wallet. Be sure to protect your mobile devices with passwords and encryption.

Avoid skimming: If you have to use an ATM during your travels, be sure that it is in a secure location, and whenever possible, use one stationed at a bank branch. Fake ATM machines are known to have been placed in high traffic tourist areas. Shield your pin entry with your other hand to avoid shoulder surfers. Debit cards also provide thieves with a direct pipeline to your bank accounts. When used with a PIN, you need not sign for the purchase. When used for a ?credit? purchase with a signature, no confirming PIN is needed. This is why debit cards are deemed valuable to thieves. It is also more difficult and time consuming to resolve fraudulent purchases made with debit cards than to resolve those made with credit cards.

Five Layers of Water Safety Protection

In 1987, Life Saver coined the phrase “layers of protection” to describe the most effective way to prevent drownings. Almost 30 years later, everyone (including the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance) recommends layers of protection.

Five key layers of protection are:

1. Parent supervision

Nothing beats parent supervision. Proactive parent supervision is your most important tool in drowning prevention. When using the pool, active supervision means sitting close to the pool with your full attention on the child/children — no reading, no texting, just watching the pool. At parties/events, we recommend designating a person as a Water Watcher (we offer lanyards and whistles to give to the person to denote them), and change shifts every 15 minutes. Most drownings occur, though, when the child was thought to be in the house, nowhere near the pool area. In 67% of fatal drowning cases, a parent was responsible for supervising the child. So, supervision can and does fail, and that’s why you need additional layers of protection.

2. High locks on all doors and windows.

Locks out of the reach of children should be installed, and used, on every door and window that leads to the pool area. Lots of drownings happen because a parent didn’t know that the child had figured out the door knob, so don’t rely on the door being shut. Also, close up and doggy/pet doors that access the pool. Lots of children who drown got to the pool via a doggy door.

3. Pool Safety Fence

Pool fencing is the only layer of protection that physically isolates the backyard from the pool. Fences should be at least 4′ tall and have a self-closing, self-latching gate. Mesh pool safety fence, like Life Saver Pool Fence, has proven to be an effective layer of protection for over 45 years. It’s very transparent, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to remove when entertaining only adults.

4. Alarms

Drowning is silent. Alarms break that silence. There are door/window alarms, alarms that sit in the pool, and our favorite, the Safety Turtle which is worn on the child.  If the child falls into the pool, an alarm inside that house goes off.

5. Swimming Lessons

All children should receive swimming lessons as early as their parents and pediatricians feel comfortable. Swimming lessons can begin earlier than one might think, some organizations training even infants to roll over and float, and to swim to the edge of the pool in the event that they fall in.

5.5 CPR

And if all of the other layers of protection fail, parents should be trained in CPR. Knowledge of CPR can make the difference between life, permanent disability, and death.

Best Playground Safety Tips

With summer in full swing and back to school recess around the corner, kids everywhere will be headed to playgrounds to swing and slide to their heart’s content.  Unfortunately, playground time can also mean injury time. Over 67% of injuries occur from faulty playground equipment or a fall. Each year 200,000 children are treated in the ER for playground injuries in the U.S. That equates to 547 injuries per day and 1 child every 3 minutes. And over 75% of public playgrounds and 91% of home playgrounds lack a proper protective surface and 45% result in a severe injury such as a fracture or concussion. These statistics are staggering but it’s important to share the message so that people can make the appropriate changes that are essential to keeping children safe.

The folks at Rubber Mulch have put together these leading safety tips for playground safety that includes what to inspect on the playground, the correct length of the soft surface under the swings, basic ideas for safety and more. The following tips will help you plan the perfect playground for plenty of fun filled days with your little one.

Top Tips for Playground Safety

•Maintain a visual line of sight with children.

•The opening in playground equipment should be less than 3.5 inches or larger than 9 inches so a head cannot get caught.

•Check metal slides to make sure they’re not too hot to the touch.

•Make sure kids wear shoes or sneakers in the playground to protect their feet.

•The length of soft surface under swings should be double the height of the swing set.

•Choose equipment that’s right for your kids’ size and age—toddlers cannot use metal swings seesaws or slides yet.

•Place rubber mulch, mats or soft surface under the playground to cushion falls—it’s best to avoid playgrounds with a concrete surface.

•Inspect the playground and sandbox for splintered wood, broken glass, sharp metals, uncovered chains or loose bolts, wet spots or missing ladder rungs.

•Remove necklaces, scarves, and handbags, clothes with drawstrings or clothing that may get caught.

•Apply sunscreen on the kids before letting them play in the sun.

•Fence the playground in so kids can’t run into traffic.

Playgrounds have been making kids happy for many, many years.  While accidents can happen, following some of this sage advice, will help reduce injuries and ensure that kids can play safely and have fun at their neighborhood or school playground.
